The coming era of jellyfish ascendancy

I admit it, my devotion to the work of George Monbiot (or The Monb, as he's apparently known in some environmental circles) borders on the unhealthy.

But this piece on marine conservation, and the overfishing of top predators such as sharks, is really excellent.

The Spanish fishing industry, he writes, is "traditionally dominated by Galician fascists". There's no fascist like a Galician fascist.

Hi John. I agree with Monbiot that a "tiny [fishing] industrial lobby seems to have governments in the palm of its hand" and I think that fishing activities should receive not a single penny or cent from taxpayers.

But I have to correct Monbiot on the "fascists" question. The Spanish fishing industry is dominated by Galician fishermen, not by Galician fascists. Galician fishermen are not fascists. They use government for their own ends, as do Spanish and French farmers, German miners and so many other lobby groups, but that doesn't make them fascists.

Your statement that "there's no fascist like a Galician fascist" doesn't make any sense whatsoever.

I take the opportunity to congratulate you on your impeccable reporting of ecological science.

Ah, ok. It just didn't make sense to me.
